What does it mean to you to be a hairdresser?

Being a hairdresser means I get to wake up and live my passion, get paid for my dreams while making others dreams come true.

I turn frowns upside.

I blow dry your troubles away.

I use my brush to color you wonderful.

I actually get to help people not have a bad hair day!    When look in the mirror and our hair is not right it throws everything out of balance.  You can the have the best make artistry in the world on your face but, you have bad hair no one see it.  If you all you see is your bad hair then you feel bad.
I have the ability to change.  I can make you feel good creating a butterfly affect of good feelings and knowing that I have put a smile on just one face is all worth it to me.

If you could have dinner with an industry celebrity or icon, who would it be, and why?

A year as flown by and I have had the most amazing career journey to date and I still must say Vidal Sassoon is my beacon.  I received his book from my sister and just loved reading it.  I would love to hear re counts of the early years when he was fighting in the war, being left in an orphanage, war torn London, etc.
Every single day Vidal is a part of my career.  I reference in my brain or at my computer a Sassoon cutting technique everyday I stand behind the chair.
I also find myself seeing more and more inspiration from his educational videos the more experience I have as a stylist.
I will always say,  "If you don't look good, we don't look good"

What do I hope to get out of Spread the Love 2013

I want to Inspire, Encourage, and Uplift.   I need to give some HUGS...from coast to coast and around the globe.

The economic downfall does not discriminate  every socio-economic background has been affected and I need to let those folks know we can move on and we can move up!   The rise is domestic violence is alarming but, is related to a poor economy and sometimes all a women needs to feel good about herself to have the courage to get out of a bad environment and we all certainly know a good hair cut and color is better than chicken soup for the soul...

Cancer cases are growing everyday and 41% of woman diagnosed with cancer are afflicted with breast cancer. We can shave some heads and raise some money!

This journey is a healing journey for me knowing that I have the power to help others just I have been helped these past couple of years.

Who is your biggest inspiration? 2013

Always and forever, my parents remain my biggest inspiration.  Dad passed away summer I was 19 and I must quote the old cliche, "If knew then what I know now" ,...My Dad kicked ass and I did not know it.

A paragraph about Dad,   at 16 yrs old he left home and hitchhiked from Poplar Bluff, MO, to California and back.   My Dad would ride his bicycle 15 miles one way just to come out to the country to date my mother.   My Dad would not let us have much to do with his siblings and their families however after my Mother passed away I found out from cousins of mine that my Dad would go and see his sisters on a regular basis and bring them fresh vegetables he grew.  I could type util my fingers fell off with all the amazing things about my Dad.

A paragraph about Mom, I have literal seen my mothers fingers bleed from working so hard.  My Mom actually is the person who taught me how to split wood and shoot free throws.  My Mom worked the third shift in a factory to help support me while I was in college, she worked all night on her feet with diabetic ulcers on her legs and never would she ever call in sick.  While Mom was in a come during her last days on earth. I would do a mini roller set in the front of her hair just to give her a little glamour among all the tubes and wires.

I feel so sad that it takes loosing people to truly know there value and that is why we must remember, to not look at the person in front of our mirror but, to look to the person sitting in front of our mirror.

I miss my Mom so much,  she would love that I could do her hair.

I will not quit. I will not stop. I will not yield. I will not lay down

I will not quit.  I will not stop. I will not yield.  I will not lay down.  I am the son of Alfred and Joyce Hornbeck and they raised me right and neither of them were quitters!!!   My parents were strong, hard workers who's work ethic was unparalleled.    I have seen my fathers hands bleed from blister while clearing brush to make extra money and I have dressed  and wrapped the ulcers on my mothers legs before she headed out for an 8 hour shift on a concrete floor and neither one of those great people ever quit.
I must meditate on Romans 12:12 "Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on."=NLT
and my favorite Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to".

I am facing now some of my biggest challenge. Due to unexpected events and a large chunk due to the state of the economy my funds are low.   So low, that the past several days I have eaten peanut butter and bread.  Thankfully my sister was gracious and sent 2 loaves home with them from trip to see her this past weekend.   I am past due on the power bill, I am past due on the rent, and today  my car stopping running and started spurting oil like a Texas gusher all over the engine.  Thankful I have my AAA membership which I have maintained for many years and it always give me a great return on my investment.   So, my car has been towed.  I am home.  I am writing.  I am not quitting.

Today's events have really put into perspective how one can become homeless.  This is such a close reality to me.   You think you are working hard and that the more you work the more financially things will improve however outside, unexpected factors throw you for a loop.

I am completely kicking ass (not trying to brag) in my career.  Every day I stand behind that chair I see improvement in everything I am doing....sectioning, finger placement, application, blow dry. and of course backcomb.    I had a lady come in from out of town for a shampoo flatiron style today and  she was mature, in her retirement however she was young in spirit.  She requested her hair be straight with no wave and no bump on the ends.  I knew when she told me no bump on the ends I had a good one in the chair.  I pulled out "Ole Blue"  my favorite Babyliss flatiron and did as she requested then proceed to combine some Aveda Air Control hairspray with my backcombing skills and took this fashionable lady to fabulous. In just 1 hour I restyled her hair to make her look 10 years younger!  She loved it.  I loved it.  This is why I love doing it.   I finally have a career that I think is a career.

Finally,  I need to make my life work for my career.  The last thing I must do is something I have been doing.  PRAY.  Please pray for me.  Strength, Wisdom, and Ability.    Also, pray that Ameren UE won't shut my power off...Since I make $203.00 dollars a year more than the cut off for assistance....yep that's like $20.00 a month.

My bio paid off.

Last night I had a requested client on my book and I did not know the name nor did she have a referring guest.    She had fabulous hair and a chic pants suit.  I greeted her brought her back to my chair and found that she had been searching for a new salon and through our web search she read my bio and knew I was the one to see.  We have a great color/highlight and cut service.  I pushed her limits with the new Aveda star Dahlia lip color and sent her home with a bright smile and some fresh backcombing education.   I hope I have a client for lift.   "P" was total glam!
